        What are Utility Markers?

Utility markers are permanent posts or signs used to indicate the path of underground utility lines. Unlike temporary paint or flags, these durable markers remain visible throughout the project and long after, helping crews avoid dangerous or costly strikes. Each marker is color-coded according to the APWA standard to indicate the type of buried utility.

        What Is 811?

811 is the national “Call Before You Dig” number. Before starting any digging project, calling 811 helps utility companies locate and mark underground lines to prevent accidents, service outages, and costly repairs.

Why call 811? Because hitting buried utilities can have serious consequences. It helps prevent:
        • Damage to underground facilities – Avoid breaking gas pipelines, water mains, communication cables, etc.
        • Service outages – Prevent knocking out power or communications for you and your neighbors.
        • Costly repairs or legal liabilities – A ruptured line can lead to expensive fixes, fines, and lawsuits.
        • Serious injuries or fatalities – Striking a gas or electric line risks explosions or electrocution, endangering lives.

        APWA Utility Color Code

        Uniform Color Code (APWA Standard)

To avoid confusion, the American Public Works Association (APWA) developed a Uniform Color Code used nationwide for utility markings. This standardized color system means that each color corresponds to a specific type of utility. Whether markings are paint, flags, or permanent posts, the colors stay consistent so everyone knows what buried lines are present.
